News: Rhys signs a record deal

Rhys has signed a record deal with Right Track Records and a worldwide digital deal with Universal. He’ll be releasing his debut single Downhill through Right Track/Universal on June 25th 2012. News of gigs in London and Cardiff that week, plus the mother and father of all parties, will follow. Downhill is taken from Great Falls, which will be released worldwide by Right Track/Universal later in the year.

Today, one of our favourite tracks from Rhys’ first album, The Fire Stairs.

Rhys on Straw: “Straw dates from the early noughties when I was recording lots of my songs at Boz Boorer’s studio in West Hampstead. I was playing about with a funny tuning (the top E string tuned down to D) when I came up with the guitar hook. Then I got the verse tune. Everything else came (lyrics, doo doo doos, outro, everything) in one improvised vocal take at Boz’s. After that came the jigsaw puzzle of trying to fit it all together. The recording of this was a bit fraught, with a lot of false starts and redoing. The last tracks to go down were the acoustic guitars. I played them on the day Italy beat Wales in the Six Nations in 2007. I think you can still hear the anger on this track.”

12 For 12: A new project

Rhys will be writing twelve new songs in 2012 with titles suggested by his Facebook and Twitter followers. Each month, he’ll pick a title, write a song, record it, then post it here. By the end of the year, there’ll be an album’s worth of new material created this way. How about that.

Gigs: Rhys Williams live at the Regal Room

Rhys is taking a break from noisy band gigs for a bit, swapping them for the reverential hush and superior catering of the acoustic scene. His first gig of 2012 will be at the Regal Room. It’s the spin off venue from the Bedford in Balham and one of the best singer-songwriter venues in London, perhaps the world. OK, we’re sounding like Alan Partridge now. We had the audiobook for Christmas. Anyway, come along and support Rhys at the Regal Room. See you soon.

After the 100 Club

This picture, taken by Annelie Rosencrantz, features Rhys at his last London gig of the year at the 100 Club, a few weeks back.

Rhys played Masquerade, Diamond Tears, Carrying Destiny Home, Cressida Road, Downhill, Red and Comfort.

Carrying Destiny Home is a brand new song – we’ll make an acoustic version available here soon.

The show rounded off a great 2011 for Rhys. Great Falls was released in May. The first run of physical copies has sold out. These are only available at Rhys’ gigs so watch out for more dates in early 2012. The album’s also available online via iTunes and Spotify, amongst others. It’s going to be withdrawn in February in time for the full commercial release later in 2012, so hurry if you want your copy.

The commercial release of the album will be preceded by a single from the album. We’re still umm-ing and aah-ing over which one it will be. Any thoughts, get in touch. Along with the single release will be a short UK tour. We’ll announce the dates here as soon as we know them. That’s all for now. Hope you had a great Christmas. Have an amazing 2012.

Gigs: Last London gig of the year at the 100 Club

On 25 November 2011, Rhys will be playing his last London gig of the year at the 100 Club.

Rhys will be playing material from Great Falls, as well as some brand new material.

The show is likely to be very busy, so it’s worth buying tickets in advance from Ticketweb.

Can anyone hear the sound of flushing?

On June 2nd, Rhys and the band will be playing at TV Nights at Ginglik in Shepherd’s Bush. Ginglik is a fabulous venue that used to be a Edwardian public convenience.
