The street’s waking
Listen for the footsteps on the roof
Dark anger written on your body like a bruise
It’s only you that the daylight has forgotten
Only you
On and on, on and on
Never moving from the pattern that I started on
I’ve a feeling that I don’t belong
To the one that stayed behind
Cold London
Cuts a lonely figure in the gloom
An archipelago of islands
And no one with a word to say to you
No one
On and on, on and on
Never moving from the pattern that I started on
I’ve a feeling that I don’t belong
To the one that stayed behind
The trees were talking
They were shaking off their clothes
In that moment, I began
To be another man
How can I sleep another night inside
A home where I don’t belong?
On and on, on and on
Never moving from the pattern that I started on
I’ve a feeling that I don’t belong
To the one that stayed behind
There are no angels out to get you
Or demons to protect you
There’s no power above you
I would recognise
Time’s a feeling that I don’t belong
To the one that stayed behind
One of my favourite lyrics on the album, about the daily grind of a relationship gone sour, played out against the backdrop of a seemingly endless London winter. The reference to an ‘archipelago of islands’ refers to the way people see London if they only know it via the tube map, but I also like it as a metaphor for how easy it is to become insular in a big city. The middle 8 is a nod to Morrissey (*nods to Morrissey*). This track is the first appearance of legendary pedal steel genius BJ Cole on Great Falls. He did about four takes of this, all of which were perfect.
