Am I the one that troubles you?
The someone who is making you blue?
Putting it another way
Should I say I’m sorry to you?
Oh, Red, my secret lover
Red, I’ve got your number
Red, when you’re around, I’m on the run
When my heart is open,
Red, it’s open for you
Red, I’m helpless and I’m overcome
Moving into open space
The soundless wind blew sand in my face
Like something you once thought you heard
As my lips were forming the words
You have carried armies to their beds
Whispering the words that made them deaf
And every one a stranger to himself
Will you lift her skirts up in the rain?
Turning on your heels to run away?
Oh, Red, my secret lover
Red, I’ve got your number
Red, when you’re around, I’m on the run
When my heart is open,
Red, it’s open for you
Red, I’m helpless and I’m overcome
You’re my secret lover
I’ve got your number
When you’re around, I’m on the run
My heart’s open for you
So wide open for you
My heart’s open and I’m overcome
I used to be such an innocent
My God, you sweet little innocent
I used to be such an innocent one
This is one of those songs that seemed to write itself. The only bits I remember writing are the second verse, which I thought up on a trip to Spain (hence the reference to the wind blowing sand in my face) and the middle 8, which I wrote at least a decade later while we were recording this album. The guitar solo over the intro took several attempts to perfect. I think I tried it on every combination of guitar and amp. This one is my Gibson ES335 played through an Electro-Harmonix Micro Synth pedal (operated by Thomas) into a Hiwatt amp. I hope it sounds like Radiohead. All the other takes sounded like Gary Moore.
