Banknotes

It’s your funeral, darling
Do your worst
I’ve had a peak-time 9 to 5 falling down to earth
You’re the only one the camera loved enough
It’s such a peculiar way to prove your worth

Blow, wind, to the sea
Carry my fortune to the east
Banknotes on the breeze
Hey, would you believe?
Darling, is it heaven now to be free?
Banknotes on the breeze?

High street theatre
Darling, do your turn
Leaping up, grabbing at what you never earned
You’re a loaded gun they fired off at her
Anger’s such a wonderful leveller

Could you be the first ones?
Comfortably, the last ones?
Could you be the first ones?
The last ones?

Blow, wind, to the sea
Carry my fortune to the east
Banknotes on the breeze
Hey, would you believe?
Darling, is it heaven now to be free?
Banknotes on the breeze?

Black hole, sugar sweet
You and I, strangers who finally meet
Banknotes on the breeze
Sugar sweet banknotes
Bottle green banknotes
Everywhere, banknotes
Banknotes on the breeze

This was the first song to be recorded for Great Falls and the last to be included. I recorded it with a different bunch of musicians a year before we did everything else. On this recording, you can hear Nikolaj Bjerre, a fantastic drummer and an old Danish friend of Thomas, Spencer Cullum, pedal steeler for the likes of the Deadstring Brothers and Caitlin Rose, and Fire Stairs singing stalwarts Michelle Hendry and Anna-Louse Maloney. The song itself predates both albums. It just found its time and place here.
